We, netizens and representatives of miscellaneous organizations on the territory of C.I.S. and ex-USSR countries express our social attitude towards the .SU issue in this letter.
As of now there are some people and organizations who take actions that can lead either to further development of the .SU domain or its total destruction. We are anxious about the fact that many private individuals and non-commercial, educational organizations and small businesses having their internet-identity (existing web URLs and e-mail addresses) based on .SU can take some serious damages in a result of TLD SU destruction.
We as users stay out of arguments about technical issues that play for .SU destruction. From the marketing point of view (which - by all means - should determine the technical point of view with the users' interests and not the other way around) existence of .SU is fully justified. We don't agree with the attitude of those people who say that we will not be harmed by .SU destruction. On this market every solution is possible if it is demanded by users just like different watches or briefcases ranging in price from $1 to $15000 and more for an item. This is rather a question of personal preferences and habits of every one. No internet user should become a hostage of some administrative and political games of separate individuals who traditionally were closer than many regular users to the decision-making Internet organizations.
We demand that SU-related decisions should be taken with a proper regard to the users' opinion. We are directly affected economically and ideologically by the issue of TLD SU possible freezing and/or its possible total destruction. We demand an open public discussion of the issue and attention of all people who influence the process of Internet standards and regulations development. We demand a fair economical and political competition of different states and domain names on the internet so that there would be no more talks about impossibility of such. Let the users control the prices, let the prices based on equal starting conditions and equal guarantees control the market and not separate more active radically thinking individuals. We have a real opportunity to watch the Internet community react to the market proposals and how the community of Internet leaders answers this.
To create an open competition on a domain name market we should create conditions that do not hinder users from using their generic right of free choice either to keep their Internet identities or to change them. Any actions directed to destroy the existing internet domain name will destroy the logic and basic principles and rules of natural development of a the free and open society based on democratic values.
